SafeWork NSW Roll Bars Save Lives

Quad bikes continue to be the biggest killer on Australian farms with roll over being the leading cause of death. Five families in NSW have lost a loved one from a quad bike roll over since 2020 alone. There have been over 280 quad bike fatalities in Australia since 2001.

This is why the Australian Government introduced the Consumer Goods Quad Bike Safety Standard in 2019 – to protect quad bike users. Stage 2 of the safety standard will come into effect this October which calls for rolls bars to be fitted at point of sale to all new and second hand imported quad bikes sold in Australia.

Roll bars, or operator protective devices, are designed to protect riders from being crushed or pinned underneath the quad bike in the event of a roll over. Statistics show that not one of the quad bike rollover fatalities reported in Australia had a roll bar fitted.

SafeWork NSW has been long-term advocates for improving quad bike safety and offers support through the NSW Quad Bike Safety Rebate and Free Training Program. Up to $2,000 can be claimed in safety rebates including $600 for each roll bar (ATV lifeguard or quad bar flexi). Rebates for helmets, drones and side-by-side vehicles (SSVs) are also available. Quad bike and SSV training across regional NSW is free for all eligible businesses and their workers. All participants receive a free helmet.
